Overview

America’s Test Kitchen (ATK) partnered with The Rise Journey (Rise) with the intention of making DEIBA learning experiences readily available to their team on a consistent basis. With the help of Rise’s Experiential Learning program, the ATK team was able to choose from over 150 Lunch & Learn (L&L) sessions to support a workplace culture where diversity and inclusion remains an active ingredient. This case study breaks down the approach that led to 97% of ATK employees surveyed finding value in their experience.

About the Client

America's Test Kitchen (ATK) is a renowned culinary brand that focuses on scientifically testing recipes, equipment, and ingredients to provide reliable cooking advice and product reviews through its television shows, magazines, cookbooks, and online platforms. With a mission to empower home cooks with reliable information and techniques, it has become a trusted resource for culinary enthusiasts seeking to improve their skills in the kitchen.

One of the most helpful things is for me to be able to present the recap to our senior leadership team and say, ‘Okay, so we spent this much money, this is what we got out of it and this is the feedback we got,’ which we can use to guide our next move.
— Deva Djaafar, ATK Executive Assistant, Office Operations Manager, Diversity + Inclusion Leader

The Challenge

America's Test Kitchen sought to create a nuanced diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) curriculum that moved beyond basic training, catering to employees at all organizational levels while considering budget constraints and fluctuating interests. Challenges included avoiding repetition, offering niche topics, and gathering employee feedback, leading them to rely on post-session data and surveys for insights.

The Rise Journey Strategy

The Rise Journey identified popular topics and engaged employees through sessions like Bystander Intervention, fostering support and collaboration. They adjusted their curriculum based on post-session feedback, also aiding internal culture initiatives like Hispanic Heritage Month, offering both educational resources and leadership support.

The Results

The Rise Journey has been America's Test Kitchen's main DEI education provider since 2001, adapting to changing needs and resources. By leveraging reporting to showcase training effectiveness on retention and inclusion, they achieved consistently positive feedback, with 97% finding sessions valuable and 93% wanting more training, demonstrating enduring impact on the organization's evolution.
