Meet Azadeh Malekan

ASL Educator & Speaker

Azadeh Malekan has been an American Sign Language (ASL) educator since 2011. Born in Iran, she was surrounded by foreign languages and later became fascinated with visual language acquisition. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Linguistics and her Masters Degree in the Teaching of ASL as a Foreign Language from Teachers College, Columbia University. She believes that a holistic educational model can profoundly change learners’ perceived self-efficacy and, ultimately,  their success.

She began her professorship at LaGuardia Community College and has worked at Hofstra University, Molloy University, Nassau Community College and New York University. She was a Remote Adjunct Professor with the University of Virginia’s revered ASL program. She curated the ASL curriculum for NYU school of Professional Studies. She has hosted hundreds of independent workshops - tailoring instruction to the audience. She has taught ASL to Medical professionals - enabling an important population to communicate with the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Communities.

Propelled by her desire to bolster others, Azadeh became a certified Life Coach and Mindfulness Teacher in 2016 - implementing these techniques to create a stress-free learning environment. She created AtoZmindfuleducation.com, a community platform that provides pedagogical tools for teachers through discussion and collaboration. As creator of Lingua-guru.com - a space that honors the art of communication,  she helps her clients alleviate anxiety  pertaining to communication tasks of written, spoken and visual means. Her language style has been described as “ poetry in motion” by clients, students, and friends alike.

Azadeh is passionate about the intersection of ASL and education and feels privileged to be an educator. She resides in New York and is a dancing, yoga and cat enthusiast.
