This session will equip healthcare professionals such as nurses, physicians, EMTS, pre-med students and those who work in healthcare to be able to communicate with patients whose primary language is American Sign Language. By learning foundational signs and strategies, learners will be able to support the understanding of d/Deaf individuals in everyday and emergency healthcare settings. The session will also provide learners with communication strategies to enhance visual communication. 

  • Learn basic signs and sentences pertaining to medical situations that can be used to communicate with Deaf individuals

  • Learn how to produce and decode fingerspelled information in  medical settings

  • Demonstrate best practices when communicating with d/Deaf patients who have varying communication preferences
